Next theme - Pick a Year

This guy built a strong case for his selection.

  1. Okay, I'm going to read, I am , but I just want to say this first off. I am not necessarily going to do three songs from the best year or even my favorite year. That wasn't what I understood us as saying. We said "a" year, not "the most awesomest" year. Some of you (Marcy) may want to do a theme within a theme and try to make some argument about why your year is better than someone else's (Pat). I would even make a case for the best three songs from a crappy year (Deb) would be a cool thing, but I might not do that either. Hell, how about the best Madonna songs from 2008 (Greg)?
    I'm just saying.

  2. Man, when I read that Bob Dylan was 24 and all hopped up on goof-balls when he did Blonde On Blonde, I just feel like I wasted my youth by not taking better advantage of the feeling that I knew more than the rest of the world. It probably made me less of a dick than I could have been, but also less of a god.

  3. The funniest thing about that comment (and there were several) for me was that I usually think my picks are the un-coolest.

This theme has extra decisions to make. I'm never a fan of additional complication. But in addition to the actual songs I've gotta choose a year. And THEN I've decided on a house rule to impose on myself -- for example if I picked 1976 (and there really isn't much reason to, but y'know) it would be awesome to pick something like say Roadrunner by the Modern Lovers. But really, I didn't hear that in 1976. I was listening to Kansas. So instead of Roadrunner you would more likely get Carry On My Wayward Son.

So anyway, it's complicated. Because there has to be a cutoff for that house rule, otherwise if I picked say 1967 you'd be getting Puff the Magic Dragon and On Top Of Spaghetti. I loved On Top Of Spaghetti.

  4. Is there a recording of On Top Of Spaghetti that is your favorite? I seem to recall Tom Jones singing the hell out of it.
I can't do the house-rule of songs I listened to that were also released that year, since from a very young age I have been treating songs that are decades old as new songs. Underdog and Let Me Hear It From You by Sly and the Family Stone came out in 1967. A two year old can't be expected to search something like that out. Puff The Magic Dragon was too sophisticated (and druggy) for my innocent mind. I discovered it like 6 years ago and love them. They aren't 2005 picks. They have to be 1967. Mmm, I going to go listen to 1967.
    Wait, what's wrong with 1976?

  5. And my Itunes lists those two Sly & The Family Stone songs as 1995, when the CD came out. Lame.

  6. I'm not sure, it may have been a muppet. But that's why there has to be a caveat to that particular house rule so it only applies to say when I started high school or something.

Or I could pick a year before I was born, but then I'd need a Delorean I guess.

  7. My main memory of 1976 is the Bicentennial Minute.

    ReplyDelete
  8. It may also have been the year I first started listening to electronic. Jean Michel Jarre - Oxygene.

  9. Can anyone tell I'm bored at work?

    ReplyDelete
  10. If it wasn't boring they would give it a name other than work. Like a barbecue. Or Animal House. Or The Thompson Twins.

  11. Heya! When should we meet? CUZ I BOUGHT PINT GLASSES!!!!!

Greg, before? after? Also, I have a kick-ass baby name for you.

    Avett Barrett!

  12. I could pick the year 2011 in honor of the year that Baby Barrett was born. I know, songs released in 2011 with the word 'baby' in the title, that could be my theme within a theme.

  13. Brilliant.
Personally I lean towards Townes C Barnett. The initials are TCB (Taking Care of Business) which was on the ring Elvis Presley gave his entourage and the letters Aretha sings in RESPECT other than R-E-S-P-E-C-T.
"Take Care, T-C-B, Oh, A little Respect"
I don't know what the C should stand for. Coolio?
    Nice theme in theme, Deb.

  14. We can't pick a meeting date until I come up with a year. And friends, I've no clue which one to pick...

    ReplyDelete
  15. Seriously? There are dozens of them. Maybe draw one out of a hat.

    ReplyDelete
  16. no more hats!!
    have you learned nothing?

    ReplyDelete
  17. So many rules. I can't keep up.
Use a bowl. Or a cup. Or have Deb cup her hands like this. I just cupped my hands there. You couldn't see it, but I think you know what I just did.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I like hats. And random years. I might have to do just that.

But it was stupid to say we couldn't set a date until I had my year. Pick a date and I'll figure something out. If I were y'all I wouldn't expect too much though.

  19. By the way, if pint glasses are involved I can make it almost anytime. Except in the next couple weeks because Carol and I are doing a stupid cleanse and it supposedly puts a limit on my alcohol intake. As well as my sugar, processed anything, and overall fun intake. I'm not going to let that cramp my style of course. If we have the meeting during the purge I will simply enjoy my warm water with cayenne and lemon wedge from a frosty pint glass. God, that sounds miserable. I'm excited.

On a lighter note, I enjoyed some of the 80s music at the time, still do. I have submitted the occasional 80s song or at least considered doing so. This theme has made me realize I could not in good conscience submit three 80s songs in a single sitting. It just doesn't say Music Club. Or at least it doesn't say "That was a good Music Club meeting. Your songs were awesome." Someone could prove me wrong, it just won't be me.

  20. Have we decided? When's the baby due?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Bono Junior Brown Axel Jay*Z Cash Money Barrett is scheduled to arrive on the 25th of March... but if he's anything like his mother he'll have his own agenda and time of arrival... were there dates up in the air? I'm still reeling from the Marcy JWH and Old 97's threeway post.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Is there a window between Jim's return to his beloved IPA and Bono Junior Brown Axel Jay*Z Cash Money Barrett's arrival?

    ReplyDelete
  23. I can partake of the palest of the ale after the 21st. Is that too tight? Sorry to be difficult. Why is Jay*Z spelled with an *? My I-tunes spells it with a -. Am I going to have to spellcheck my entire music collection? What else have I been spelling wrong? OMyG, have I been mispronouncing things, too?

    ReplyDelete
  24. I thought it might have been trade marked so I changed it up a bit... I didn't want to have to write a check to the origingal JZ everytime I yelled at my kid for jumping on the bed... that's a lot of checks for 5 cents a piece... I'm not made out of 5 cent checks, I'm just not.

  25. You know what, I take back the 80s remark. I have some decent stuff from 1987. Different sounding from each other.
Not gonna use them. Already decided what year to go with and it ain't in the 80s. Just shoring up the actual songs.

    ReplyDelete
  26. My songs are getting itchy to be played. You all want to come over tomorrow?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Thursday is better for me, but I can do tomorrow night.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Do I have a second for Thursday?

    ReplyDelete
  29. You know what, I was actually thinking of seeing Bobby Bare Jr Thursday night. I'm not sure when it starts but maybe Wednesday is better for me. Look at me being difficult.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Look at me looking at you being difficult... As my life is nothing but a series of days in between music club meetings I am available both Wednesday and Thursday. Look at me being pathetic...

    ReplyDelete
  31. I am responding on behalf of Pat... He will not be prepared with three songs tomorrow so he would like some more time. He doesn't even have his year picked out.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Did Pat injure his fingers or did his work block his access to our blog? Do they really care that much?
Tell Pat we will be patient and kind.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I thought Pat never decided these things until the day of anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I thought they might have limited Pat's access to his keyboard unless it was "work" related typing... I think I can do Thursday but would have to run it by the Barrett Congress. Please stay tuned. I too, do not have a year or songs, but I'm not sweating it... I've also only had 9 hours of sleep in 6 days... so there's that.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Some of my best work was done on 1 and a half hours of sleep a day. Not the math I just did there. That needed a good 8 hours last night plus a 20 minute nap during lunch. I carbed up, too.
6 goes into 9, 1 .5 times. See that, I did it again. Now, I'm a little exhausted.

    ReplyDelete
  36. OK, I can do tomorrow. I"m supposed to meet someone for drinks Thursday so technically I'm not available then though the chance of it being rescheduled is probably over 70%. But I can't be the one to reschedule because I've done that the past two times.

Anyway, y'all forced my hand. I could have posted from work by the way but I was actually working for a change. Go figure.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Sounds like next week may be a better idea all around.

And as fellow Sag TW says "You can never hold back spring."

    ReplyDelete
  38. So Thursday the 31? I'm still free.
My choices are getting narrower, by the way.
Is anyone else seeing Bobby Bare Jr? Maybe he'll sing that one song.

    ReplyDelete
  39. That date works for me. Do we have a consensus?

Topic change! Martha Wainwright sang at our stockholders meeting today. I prefer the vocal stylings of her brother Rufus and that is saying A LOT!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I know, right?
A lot of people love Martha, but she just bugs me for the most part.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm not seeing Bobby Bare Jr, nor have I seen Martha Wainwright. I have seen Lucy Wainwright Something-or-other. She seemed nice.

I do hope he plays that one song though.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Bobby didn't play that one song, but he did play the other one. So, yeah, I was pretty jazzed.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Wouldn't it be weird/cool if we all randomly picked the same year?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Is there a mathematician in the house that can figure out the chances of the 5 of us all choosing the same year? Assuming that no one picks songs before the 50s, and I realize that's a big assumption, that's 60 years to choose from.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Congrats, Greg. I think you have picked the oldest song so far. Hank williams in 1949? That was a long time ago. I think no one went back further.
