  5. I'm hosting. I could do it Wednesday. I'd be scrambling for my songs but what is new! I could also do next Wed. or Thurs.

  6. As in tomorrow? Or next Wednesday? Tomorrow could be problematic, Pat and I are tentative, actually so is next Wednesday, let me know what you all decide.

  13. The music in Beyoncé's HOLD UP is kind of Énglish Beat’s version of Can’t Get Used To Losing You.

  14. Let’s see:

Hold Up - Beyonce would like to thank The Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs & English Beat (or at least “Doc” Pomus & Mort Shuman (or that’s what Jim says)) (marcy)

If You Were The Woman, And I Was The Man - Cowboy Junkies and John Prine LIVE! (greg)

Charlotte Sometimes - The Cure (A movie was titled this with the tagline "Sometimes the truth is in the lie”) (j)

    1. Working In A Coal Mine - Devo (Lord, I'm so tired / How long can this go on?) (pat)

One Dance (feat. Wizkid & Kyla) - Drake (The contributions of Wizkid, U.K. R&B vocalist Kyla and U.K. funky mean the sounds that Americans crave are coming from increasingly global roots and routes.) (marcy)

Hoodrat - The Hold Steady (Let’s take a minute to appreciate the alliteration in this song. The language is evocative as fuck but a lot of the lines don’t even rhyme–what’s up with that?
Well, check this first verselet here.

“after I get sick I just get sad”
      “It burns being broke”
      “hurts to be heartbroken
”and always “being both must be a drag”

He uses the same kind of alliteration in each line. What this does is allow him to sort of spit the words at you with a bitter emphasis that makes them powerful but still euphonic. Later in the song, he does a lot of the same thing, especially with “s” sounds.
He also likes to slip in little internal slant rhymes at times, and all of this allows him to sort of say whatever he wants–telling the story with almost prosaic clarity without sounding at all prosaic. Compare the language in the tragic and relatable story of this little hoodrat to the forced lexicon of any equally complete narrative that holds itself to a strict end rhyme scheme and you’ll start to understand Finn’s genius.) 2. Original Sin (Live 1985) - INXS (Does anyone remember Rock Star: INXS? I vaguely remember watching it. I think it might be my first hate-watch.) (greg)

Lilac Wine - Jeff Buckley (The only artist to have major chart success with the song was Elkie Brooks in 1978 and the song remains closely associated with her, especially in the UK and Europe.[2] It was later included on her 1981 album Pearls.) (jim)

Tell Everybody I Know - Keb’ Mo’ (Does anyone else feel like making out?) (deb)

untitled 08 l 09.06.2014. - Kendrick Lamar (USA Today described the narrative: "one of a young woman struggling with her come-up, the other an impoverished voice lashing out at Kendrick’s own accounts of his struggles.)(marcy)

    3. Ceremony - New Order (New Order released the song as a single twice, firstly in March 1981 and secondly in September 1981 featuring new member Gillian Gilbert. Which on his this? It was written and recorded by Joy Division as well.) (j)

Orange Crush - R.E.M. (The video for the song won the band its first VMA, for Best Post-Modern Video. Ooh, PoMo!)(j)

Star 69 - R.E.M. (Of all of the songs on Monster, "Star 69" is the one that evolved most from its initial demo. It started out at six minutes long before having its bridge excised and its original chorus discarded.)(pat)

      Delete
    4. Kiss - Tom Jones (This is the version he recorded with Art of Noise, but he recorded another version for his 2003 greatest hits album) (deb)

Fly Me to the Moon - Tony Bennett (In response to a publisher's request for a simpler song, Bart Howard wrote a cabaret ballad in waltz time which he titled "In Other Words". A publisher tried to make him change some lyrics from "fly me to the moon" to "take me to the moon" but Howard refused to do this. Many years later Howard commented that “... it took me 20 years to find out how to write a song in 20 minutes") (jim)

Sweetest Thing - U2 (At Alison's request, profits from the single went to her favoured charity, Chernobyl Children's Project International.) (deb)

    5. Jolene - White Stripes (According to Parton, the song was inspired by a red-headed bank clerk who flirted with her husband Carl Dean at his local bank branch around the time they were newly married. In an interview, she also revealed that Jolene's name and appearance are based on that of a young fan who came on stage for her autograph.) (jim)

Young Fresh Fellows Theme - Young Fresh Fellows ( "A collector's disc of the sounds that we in the Pacific Northwest live and play by — a high-hearted, medium-fi recording of such nostrums as the whistle of a ferryboat, the hoofbeats of the rodeo, the roar of racing hydroplanes and the musical beat of our symphonies and jazz.") (pat)

  15. Is there a possibility of a music club between 7/29 and 8/8 or so? I know many of you are vacationing!

  17. I will be working at the Seattle Art Fair (Which I believe I can get you all tickets for, if you want ‘em. I’ll know better as it gets closer) Thursday the 4th through Sunday the 7th. I can probably make any of the other days, though.

The 3 Ups: Wake, Break, & Make.

    2. Please when I'm in town? 7/30-8/8

    3. I've got two. Make up is way harder than I thought it would be.

I thought we were for sure going for when you are in town Gina, scheduled around Jim's availability with the Art Fair (which yeah, I definitely want tickets for, really enjoyed it last year).

    4. hello.

I get back from TOLEDO on the 30th, in Vegas for 8/1 & 8/2 and Ali's Birthday is 8/3... I leave for TORONTO/MONTREAL on 8/7... SO how does 8/4 or 8/5 sound?

Jim I'd love to come to the Art Fair as well! If Pat really enjoyed it, I want to really enjoy it too!

  21. Ok then!Either is fine with us. We're looking forwarding to hosting so if one of those days is better for everyone let us know.

  22. I'd vote for the 04th...Heads up I'm going through a heavy 90s nostalgia thing and anticipate that will be informing my choices

    ReplyDelete
  23. I can do either the 4th or 5th.

    ReplyDelete
  24. On the 4th I will either be at First Thursday until 8:00 or the art fair opening until 11:00.

On the 5th I may be at the fair until 7:00, but i might get off at 5:30 if I’m at the gallery. so, I would vote for the 5th and will try to get off at 5:30.

    1. Hey Jim- If you're at the Art Fair till 7:00 on the 5th will you still want to come to MC afterwards? Plus, isn't your b-day right around there?

    2. I’ll certainly want to try. I hate being late though.

      Yeah, it’s around there somewhere.

  25. Hey-

I won’t be working at the fair on Friday the 5th so I will be able to to make the meeting that night at pretty, pretty close to 7:00.

Did you know Lou Rawls has applicable Wake, Break AND Make Up songs?

    1. Coincidentally so does Drake.

So happy you can make it.

      I’m happy, too.

  26. By the way, "Now You’re Coming Back Michelle” is not really appropriate for the Make Up song. As a casual listener I was all “Oh, she’s coming back. That sounds like they are getting back together." But then I caught the lyric about “selling time (or fun?) to strangers” which rhymes with “dangers”.

And then, I really listened to it. Its one of those trick songs like “Green Green Grass of Home” and “She stopped Loving Her Today” (I realize I have used both of those songs on previous themes). She’s dead. She committed suicide. That’s why she’s coming back. It’s a sad, sad song.

    1. Oh, shit. Right. Spoiler alert.

Also, I can’t find an mp3. Can’t even find a YouTube version. I only have the vinyl album, "She’s Gone.” It has his Hall & Oates cover, and it’s pretty good, too.
