  1. How many votes (hopes) do we get? I want several. I realize they don't all deserve it, but I'm feeling generous.

Also, I just read this in an email at work. Can we work this into a theme of some sort?

"The practice of appropriation has been historically elemental in social and societal critique. By borrowing elements of the signifiers, icons and motifs of a given visual parlance, the artists in Ultrasonic VI have distinctively embraced adoptive techniques to illustrate the gravity of context and repetition in our communal ideologies. "

Just change the word "visual" to "aural" and "Ultrasonic VI" to "Music Club #22". You feel me?

  2. Joan Jett & the Blackhearts - Pros: Bad Reputation (album) I love Rock and Roll (sing-along) Con: Little Drummer Boy, it’s a shame she has to play the Emerald Queen now, but I always wished I had seen her live.

Heart - In 1980 they came out w/ a double album of live hits on the first album and covers and b-sides on the second. I was mad that I had to buy the first in order to get the second. I stopped buying their stuff at that point. I always had a crush on Nancy.

Rufus w/Chaka Khan - My dad had the Rufus featuring Chaka Khan album. I realize the Stones probably came out w/ their lips & tongue logo first, but I have always been partial to that album front lips logo. I wonder what happened to my dad. He doesn’t listen to this kind of stuff anymore.

G 'n R - Pro: Sweet Child O’ Mine (snake dance/ guitar solo), Patience (whistling) Con: well, pretty everything else I guess, although I like the over-the-topness of that one video.

Eric B. & Rakim - They only had 4 albums. I cannot think of a song they do. That says more about me than them, I think.

The Cure - I sing Adele’s version of love song more than theirs. And Dinosaur’s version of Just Like Heaven. I sing their version of 3 Imaginary Boys than anyone else’s.

The Spinners - I only have their Greatest Hits, but, my god, those are all so good. Rubberband Man, Games People Play, Then Came You.

Freddy King - I have Freddy King sings. It was suggested by a friend who told me that Eric Clapton should be ashamed of himself and that Freddy King was responsible for everything good about the blues that came after him. I don’t know about all that, but I like the album quite a bit.

The Beastie Boys - I enjoyed Paul’s Boutique and Check Your Head when they came out. I like Sabotage. Not the song necessarily the song, but the activity.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers - Were Kiedas and Flea in Repo Man? “Sometimes I feel like I don’t have a partner” is kind of a silly version of “Sometimes I fell Like a Motherless Child.”

Donna Summer - Hot Stuff and I Feel Love and maybe On The Radio and Love To Love You, Baby. Just the hits, I guess.

Laura Nyro - I suppose she is the singer-songwriter version of Eric B & Rakim. Don’t know much about her except that she existed. Can I still be in Music Club and hold my head up?

Donovan - I live on Donovan Street. The first song I played was Season Of The Witch. The second song was Atlantis. Carol kept yelling “Mellow Yellow!! Mellow Yellow!!”

War - For some reason, nothing says summer like Low Rider and Why Can’t We Be Friends.

I vote: Joan Jett, GnR, Donna Summer, Beastie Boys and Freddy King.

  3. I had the album Why Can't We Be Friends and soon after it's release War appeared on the Mike Douglas show which I was very excited to see.

Just before they came on my mom told everyone "Be quiet!! The group Patrick likes is coming on!" Which looking back is cute but at the time it embarrassed me enough that I don't remember the actual performance.

    Sure liked that album though.

  5. Too many great choices (y'all may not know about my obsession with Laura Nyro), but my heart belongs to The Spinners...

  6. Crap, that's right. Okay, take Guns & Roses out and put the Spinners in their place. Do not tell Axl I did that. I mean it, guys. Dude has a temper.
I loved the Mike Douglas show. Merv, too.
Which one is Ad-Rock? Grey hair, yelpy voice?
