Top 40 update

I am listening today to the final 55 songs in the Top 40 songs of the decade project, and am placing them into five tiers in order to get an inital ranking idea.

So far I've heard 42 songs. By tier:
Tier 1 -- 5
Tier 2 -- 10
Tier 3 -- 11
Tier 4 -- 16
Tier 5 -- zero.

I have problems letting go.

Update: Final tally:
Tier 1 -- 8
Tier 2 -- 13
Tier 3 -- 11
Tier 4 -- 23
Tier 5 -- zero.

Sigh.

UPDATE: We are down to 40.

  1. How can you do this? This is crazy. Someone is going to get hurt.

  2. What hair remains is not falling out, but turning whiter by the moment.

So tier four becomes tier five but there are songs in tier four I don't want to get rid of and on and on and on........

Jim, the only person getting hurt is me.

  3. The other problem I'm having is that I want Debbie's opinion on some of these, so she looks it over and says something along the lines of "how can you not have artist x in there?" or "you cut song y???" and I start thinking "yeah, how can I NOT have artist x in there??" or "man, song y is really valid".

Or...there are some songs in the list that she really does hate and conversely there are some on the bubble that she really does love.....and you want to keep the person you love more than life itself happy, or at the very least have her respect your taste somewhat, so I tend to lean towards keeping songs around that I know she likes.

However, Rondo A Capricio by Tosca is in the top 10 no matter what. And she HATES that song.

Disclaimer: This is only meant to illustrate my own inadequacies and folly in taking this project on. I want and value Debbie's opinion and the list is better for it. Really, honey.

  4. Ah yes, compromise is the nectar of happiness. No wait, is it the bane? Nectar or bane, its one of those. Wait again, it might not even be compromise. It might be acquiescence. Yeah, its definitely compromise or acquiescence is the bane or nectar of happiness... or shame?

  5. NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition! Our chief weapon is surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise.... Our two weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency.... Our *three* weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency...and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope.... Our *four*...no... *Amongst* our weapons....

  6. Oh for gods sake, just decide already! It's your list, your pain, your angst and suffering. This is your badge of honor my dear. Stand fast in the face of my sometimes astonishing dismay, and perhaps remind me that if I wanted, I could put my own list together.

  8. As it turns out, 2005 appears to have been the best music year of the decade, placing 10 songs on the top 40 list. All other years are represented with between 2 and 5.

I find things like that interesting.
