In Advance of the Cover Theme

When we settled upon the cover theme, my first idea for the inner-theme was the elusive Cover Cycle. In my search however, I have found a three artist cycle to be elusive.

My problem is I want the three artists to not be from the same genre, maybe even be from more than one generation. I could probably have a cycle of Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, and Johnny Cash, but the lack of variation would be kind of boring.

I thought I had a good one lined up. In 2014 Bruce Springsteen covered a song from by The Saints. JUST LIKE FIRE WOULD was one of my favorites songs of early 80s. It wasn’t a great cover but it seemed sincere and it was an interesting choice for a rock star.

The Saints do cover of Ike and Tina Turner’s RIVER DEEP, MOUNTAIN HIGH. It is my favorite version of that song. I think I may have talked about it on a previous post.

So I needed a cover of Springsteen by, if not Ike and Tina, at least Tina. A website in the internet outer-reaches said there was a version of BORN IN THE USA by Tina. It sounds like a cover song I don’t want to hear, and (fortunately?) can’t find it. So maybe I never will hear it, but then I can’t finish the cycle.

But an American rock guy doing a cover of an Australian punk band, doing a cover of an American R&B band, one of which became Swedish (or Swiss?) and covered one of the first guy’s song? That would have been fun to do.

Anyhow, I’m gonna keep trying, but it is harder than I thought it would be.

  1. Hah! You said elusive twice in the same sentence. Get a thesaurus!

  3. I am out of town the 16th through the 26th. Sorry.

Also, not to complain, but I'm not getting the posts or comments in my email anymore. So I don't what, if anything, I have missed. I hope I didn't miss anything good.

I like Sean Nelson’s writing. He has interest in things I am interested in and he often has links to different versions of a song, which is fun.

I like Jimmy Webb’s songs, but I never really considered going to this, because I do not like his singing at all. Not just his voice, I do enjoy a “bad” voice now and then, but the way he sings, which is super grandiose and mostly annoying and also kind of boring.

Jimmy Webb brings up a question I have about covers. Since "Wichita Lineman” was fist recorded by Glen Campbell, most people consider covers to be of a Glen Campbell song. But is Jimmy’s a cover as well? He is a not songwriter first, not a performer.

What about “Crazy”? Are the covers of it covers of a Patsy Cline song or a Willie Nelson song? If it is a Willie Nelson song (both a songwriter and a performer) is Patsy’s considered a cover? That seems weird.

  7. FYI- I seriously considered bringing 3 different versions of MACARTHUR PARK.

I changed my mind. So, you’re welcome.

Besides I was pretty sure one of you were bringing at least one of them.

  8. How's everyone doing with this theme? It was hard. I have my songs, and even a theme within a theme, but it may be lame. I don't know... I still have time to change my mind.
Is August 9th the date? We have not met for a very long time so I hope it is.
