Yacht rock (originally the "West Coast Sound") is a broad music style and aesthetic identified with the soft rock genre. Yacht rock was one of the biggest genres of its era, existing between the late 1970s and early 1980s. Some of the music may overlap with smooth soul, smooth jazz, R&B, funk, and disco.[Common stylistic traits include high-quality production, clean vocals, and a focus on big-hearted melodies.
You realize the sole reason I ever joined Music Club was for the promise there'd be a Yacht Club theme... There may be little incentive for me to turn up at any other showing after this!
In related news, I cannot BELIEVE I missed this smooth jazz extravaganza: http://thekey.xpn.org/2017/08/14/chick-corea-bela-fleck-go-back-nature-longwood-gardens/
The 14th I'm away so if it's not the 09th we going late Sept I fear... Is Friday the 01st an option or is that Bumbershoot / long weekend get away conflicts?
I realize I’m not going to be able to go to the meeting Saturday. I regret not seeing you all on the 9th, but hope to see you soon. I will forward songs to Marcy because I can’t not participate simply because I’m absent.
I really hate missing these. Sorry to be so misleading when I said, “I can do Saturday the 9th.” I didn’t mean for it to be a lie.
The 21st is no longer viable for me. Can we make the 28th work? Are my fears that MC is starting to lose it luster unfounded? Or are the nagging doubts that plague me true?
I was talking to Carol about Yacht Rock last night (as we apparently do now) and the only thing she could talk about was how the Yacht Driver probably wore a fun hat and wore white pants that made his butt look good while listening to these songs.
I did not previously think I could be more skeptical of a genre of music than I already was of Yacht Rock. Carol proved me wrong.
I suppose Manhattans stain white pants more than white wine coolers do. You know, when you hit those stormy seas and gale force winds.
Yacht Rock is a subset of Soft Rock. Soft Rock can be from any time period but Yacht Rock is mid 70-s to early 80's. I also think horns and a certain bounce make a song sound yachty.
Confirming I'm definitely away the 28th... If that Saturday or the following week are an option we could do this thing! Let's rock out with our yachts out 😃
Okay kids, I'm attaching a spreadsheet. Put in what days do not work for you in September. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1BNE4saVXp1rz7bbox5imG9wC4XfaxkoBpE7rzFIJVhI/edit?usp=sharing
It is so weird to see people's schedules like that. Maybe this is what people do, but I'm just getting used to it. It is impressive how busy Deb and Pat are.
Rum! Why didn’t I think of that? Let me search my iTunes.
How about songs with the word “ship” in them. "The Theme to the Courtship of Eddie’s Father” by Harry Nilsson and “Friendship” by Tenacious D and then one more.
Can it be chocolate covered cherries? I have some, as well as some chocolate with sea salt. It isn’t chocolate dipped strawberries, but on short notice what is?
I forgot how good “Friendship” by Tenacious D is. Maybe someday we do a theme of “Songs we wanted to bring, but it didn’t fit the theme we wanted to bring it for."
Thanks for hosting a great MC Marcy. I was glad Carol was a special guest. See you all on October 26th for the next one. The theme is essentially "using only one line of lyrics, what's your favorite song" and then we play the song(s).
The following songs have been unanimously given the YACHT ROCK SEAL OF APPROVAL!
Name So Into You Fooled Around And Fell In Love Baker Street How Long Peg What a Fool Believes Lowdown Thunder Island Barbados Love Will Find a Way Nights Are Forever Without You Stuck In The Middle With You Hello It's Me Couldn't Get It Right
Marcy sent me the Spotify playlist. You guys did well! Other than the obvious ANTI-yacht rock selections. Someone was just looking for attention. Barbados is the yacht-rockiest song that ever sailed.

Really? Backroom negotiations for forcing yacht rock upon Music Club?
ReplyDeleteShame. SHAME!
sidenote: do you pronounce the “h” in homage?
ReplyDeleteDefine yacht rock.

DeleteDear Dr. Reed,
DeleteI look forward to reading more of your excellent scholarly work in the near future on this MUCH-underappreciated topic.
MTP!!! (Motion to proceed)
ReplyDeleteNo reply from my dear Scorpio brothers.
ReplyDeleteYou realize the sole reason I ever joined Music Club was for the promise there'd be a Yacht Club theme... There may be little incentive for me to turn up at any other showing after this!
ReplyDeleteHow's either August 24 or 31st?
ReplyDeleteYahoo Yacht Rock. If we're looking at Thursday's the next one Pat and I are available for is September 14th. Can we wait till then?
ReplyDeleteThis should be a fun theme to pick, but I bet I won't listen to it ever afterwards.
ReplyDeleteIn related news, I cannot BELIEVE I missed this smooth jazz extravaganza: http://thekey.xpn.org/2017/08/14/chick-corea-bela-fleck-go-back-nature-longwood-gardens/
ReplyDeleteAre people around Labor Day weekend? Could we slap a Sunday night music club together?
ReplyDeleteWe're around, but Pat and I are going to Bumbershoot on that Sunday.
ReplyDeleteWe could do Saturday the 2nd, Saturday the 9th, or Thursday the 14th.
I’ll be gone Labor Day weekend. I already have Thurs, Sept 14 marked on my calendar, but I will check to see if Sat, Sept 9 works, too.
ReplyDeleteThe 14th I'm away so if it's not the 09th we going late Sept I fear... Is Friday the 01st an option or is that Bumbershoot / long weekend get away conflicts?
ReplyDeleteAhoy! I can do the 1st or the 9th... whichever works for the crew.
ReplyDeletegb
I can do Saturday the 9th.
ReplyDeleteYay! 09/09 it is!
ReplyDeleteI realize I’m not going to be able to go to the meeting Saturday. I regret not seeing you all on the 9th, but hope to see you soon. I will forward songs to Marcy because I can’t not participate simply because I’m absent.

Yachtly yours-
Jim
We will reschedule. Yacht rock has been around 40
Deleteyears. We can wait a few more weeks.
You guys are sweet. Are you sure? I don’t want to ruin everybody’s Saturday night.
DeleteSturgill Simpson @ Maymoor that night, sorry...
DeleteI've lost access to the MC master list? can someone share the google doc? Thanks!
ReplyDeletehttps://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1GtcaA9wtSTjriO0oZjnGP-D2w4XK2UjIxj9-tFmGiWg/edit?usp=sharing
DeleteI can't bear the thought of Yacht Rock MC w/out Jim, we should all be there! Let's reschedule. Back to a Thursday? How about the 21st or 28th?
ReplyDeleteI can do either date!
DeleteThe 21st is no longer viable for me. Can we make the 28th work? Are my fears that MC is starting to lose it luster unfounded? Or are the nagging doubts that plague me true?
ReplyDeleteIf something feels like it is going badly, then ignore it until the feeling goes away. That's in the constitution or the bible or something.
ReplyDeleteJim is good for the 28th. Everyone just calm the fuck down.
There's a chance I'll be away the 28th... I should know by the end of the week. Is that weekend an option? Do we need to institute a virtual MC?!
ReplyDeleteSorry I panicked back there. Just feeling a little stressed. I’m completely calm now.
ReplyDeleteIf we went with that weekend, I would be up for that.
I have faith we can make this thing happen! How bout if I bribe you all with Manhattans? Or a yacht-ier beverage like a white wine cooler?
ReplyDeleteI was talking to Carol about Yacht Rock last night (as we apparently do now) and the only thing she could talk about was how the Yacht Driver probably wore a fun hat and wore white pants that made his butt look good while listening to these songs.

When did Easy Listening change its name to Yacht Rock?
ReplyDelete*the previous message was not intended as a compliment.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I don’t think they are the same. Neither is Soft Rock. But I have not been great at telling the difference between any of them. I’m trying.

ReplyDeletei can do that Saturday, Sept 30. Please.
DeleteI can host on the 30th. 3 down, 3 to go.
ReplyDeleteExciting, right? Like Murder on the Orient Express, only good.
ReplyDeleteOkay kids, I'm attaching a spreadsheet. Put in what days do not work for you in September.

It is so weird to see people's schedules like that. Maybe this is what people do, but I'm just getting used to it. It is impressive how busy Deb and Pat are.
ReplyDeleteThis seems spontaneous but does this Wednesday work?
ReplyDeletePoliti is the wildcard. Looks like he's been traveling via Instagram.
ReplyDeletePat and I could do Wednesday.
ReplyDeleteJim reported Unavailable this Wed... By my calculations it's tomorrow or October. Talk about spontaneous! Could we really pull this off tomorrow?!
ReplyDeleteI think so! Have yacht, will rock!
ReplyDeleteI can do it tonight. Is it on?
ReplyDeleteI'm in but for the record (and this should not surprise anyone) I DO NOT LIKE SPONTANEOUS PLANS.
ReplyDeleteNow to find some goddamn songs. See you tonight!
Pat - So I guess that means turning this into a yacht themed fancy dress party is OUT OF THE QUESTION?
ReplyDeleteI would encourage it for those of us who are not me!
ReplyDeleteWell I can't wait to see you all tonight whatever you may or may not be wearing 😃
ReplyDeleteI told Carol there may be dressing up involved with tonight and asked if she would like to join us tonight. She said yes.
DeleteCan she come with me? Please say she can, because I already said she could. She seems to enjoy Yacht Rock.
Can we have a veggie pizza option so she can eat as well?
Let us know.
I told Carol there is an opportunity for dressing up tonight. She would like to come with me. Can she?
DeleteBTW, I told her she could. If she comes, we would need a veggie pizza option.
Let me know if I need to disappoint her.
The first one didn’t look like it went through. So I wrote again. Sorry for any confusion.
DeleteIs this everyone? Did Greg already say yes?
ReplyDeleteThis is super spontaneous. I’m all aquiver.
Such an active thread!
ReplyDeleteLet's keep it going.
Everyone request one ingredient for the pizza!
Anchovies!!!! (See, now you're glad I'm not there!)
DeleteMiss you all!
Clams... I'm trying to stick with a nautical theme. Rum?
ReplyDeleteDoes clam dip and potato chips count?
DeleteIt has to be chocolate covered strawberries for dessert...
ReplyDeleteRum! Why didn’t I think of that? Let me search my iTunes.

ReplyDeleteI forgot how good “Friendship” by Tenacious D is. Maybe someday we do a theme of “Songs we wanted to bring, but it didn’t fit the theme we wanted to bring it for."
ReplyDeleteI'm not naming names, I'll just say there is a hearty precedent for songs being brought that don't fit the theme...
DeleteWhy would I have 3 different versions of WHEN THE SHIP COMES IN, all by Bob Dylan? I wait, I know why.
ReplyDeleteI need to purge someday.
Someday.
Here's our yacht club playlist. Ms. Turner, your feedback would be greatly appreciated.
ReplyDeletehttps://open.spotify.com/user/m2mreed/playlist/6XoRa4D14RJ2dy9P58MllH
Was it just me, or was that the hardest theme ever?
DeleteThanks for hosting a great MC Marcy. I was glad Carol was a special guest. See you all on October 26th for the next one. The theme is essentially "using only one line of lyrics, what's your favorite song" and then we play the song(s).
ReplyDeleteDear Jim,
ReplyDeleteYes, yes it was.
your friend,
Greg
PS. Pat it wasn't the same without you.
ReplyDeleteThe following songs have been unanimously given the YACHT ROCK SEAL OF APPROVAL!
ReplyDeleteName

Fooled Around And Fell In Love
Baker Street
How Long
Peg
What a Fool Believes
Lowdown
Thunder Island
Barbados
Love Will Find a Way

Hello It's Me
Couldn't Get It Right
I don't know what that means.
DeleteYou didn't call the the Yacht Rock Federation, did you? They were able to give unanimous authenticity that quickly?
Well, they are surprisingly efficient.
Marcy sent me the Spotify playlist. You guys did well! Other than the obvious ANTI-yacht rock selections. Someone was just looking for attention. Barbados is the yacht-rockiest song that ever sailed.
