Dead or Alive - Bon Jovi
Babooshka - Kate Bush
Moving In Stereo - The Cars
People Are People - Depeche Mode
Romeo and Juliet - Dire Straits
Would I Lie To You - Eurythmics
Love Stinks - J Geils Band
Breaking The Law - Judas Priest
Momma Said Knock You Out - LL Cool J
Kick Out The Jams - MC5
Chug Chug Chug-A-Lug (Push N' Shove) Part II - The Meters
Gemini Dream - Moody Blues

Bombtrack- Rage Against The Machine
Tell Me Something Good - Rufus featuring Chaka Khan
Mississippi Goddam - Nina Simone

Well, those all seem pretty solid. It’s an honor just to be nominated, I’m sure.

Music Club #57(?!) The "using only one line of lyrics, what's your favorite song” Theme

So not to over-think it, because it is still early and all, but are you thinking of the line as a stand alone line or is it within the context of the song. Because there are a lot of lines I really enjoy, but they might not make sense or actually are kind of stupid as just a line. Its only in the context that it means anything to me or probably anybody. But I don’t expect everyone to listen to the all of the lyrics. I’m constantly surprised some of the songs I hear even have understandable lyrics. I hear someone singing a song and think, “Are those the lyrics to that song? Who knew?"

How are you envisioning it, Deb?

Already thinking about Oct 26th.

Chris Cornell RIP

I only saw Soundgarden twice. Once in college, I think it was an actual classroom, in Ellensburg where they opened up for Faith No More. It was dark and loud and he was constantly moving. The whole place smelled sweaty. To be honest, it was a kind of sexy show.

Another time was at the Moore and I was there for the opening band (Screaming Trees) and I was surprised at how big they seemed. They filled the space differently than the Trees.

After college I worked at a 7-11 in Sacramento and planned to see Soundgarden (something from home) after my shift. I did not make it, because someone stole my car battery while I was working. One of my top five disappointments in missing a band.

Anyway, i didn’t follow him around or anything and I actually deleted his SCREAM album from my computer because it was so very bad, but I’m really sad he died. I never really listened to Audioslave, but I actually have most of the Soundgarden stuff.

Also, I just know a few people who used to be roommates with him or friends with him or friends with his family and it’s sad how sad they all
are right now.

Puzzles!

So on Sunday mornings when I get up, I:

1) Make coffee
2) Get the paper
3)Turn on NPR
4) Turn off NPR after the puzzle and before that Nicklecreek guy starts his Prairie Home Companion gig.

Last Sunday they announced the next puzzle as making a short story using no more than 7 titles of Billboard #1 songs. I don’t want to enter that competition because I am afraid I will win and have to be on the radio solving puzzles while the whole world is listening. How is that a prize?

Anyway I was curious what sort of story could be made of songs in our Music Club google doc. Something like:

Far Far Away/ Boys And Girls/ Play A Train Song/ Without You/ 3 Days Later/ You Send Me/ Your Lips

Well, something like that, but with some sense making and not so weird. I’ll work on it.

Anyway...

And that is my attempt at a blog post.

Radiohead's saddest song

So this Spotify valence thing has me all curious which means I;m going to test it. You guys can test it with me. The higher the value, the more positive mood for the song. First album "Imperial Bedroom" by Elvis Costello. I predict the saddest song is "Almost Blue" WINNER: "Almost Blue" - I AM AWESOME AT THIS GAME! @2 The Hamilton Soundtrack. I predict "It's Quiet Uptown" WINNER: "Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story" - it's the last song and really, I should have gotten that one though I cry way more with "It's Quiet Uptown". #3 Bob Dylan's "Blood on the Tracks". This one I predict "If you see her, say Hello" WINNER: Damn, it's "Simple Twist of Faith". Huh, I am NOT doing well. #4 Prince's Sign o the Times - This seems easy, right? Isn't it "The Cross"? WINNER: "The Cross" and it ain't even close! One more try. Let's go with "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot' I predict "Reservations" and I will be shocked if I am wrong. WINNER: Reservations!!! MIC DROP! Thanks for playing.

Protest Songs

MC - When's our next gathering and what's the theme?  Protest songs sure feels timely...  Like the one I'm stuck on 'White Flag' which goes a little something like this:

I'll be an army
no you're not gonna stop me getting through
I'll sing a marching song and
stomp through the halls
louder than you
I could surrender
but I'd just be pretending
no I'd rather be dead than live a lie
Burn the white flag!
